1 67 / ITU Regional Network Planning Workshop with Tool Case Studies for the Arab Region, Cairo (Egypt),

16-27 July 2006

Dear Sir/Madam,

At the kind invitation of the National Telecommunication Institute (NTI) of Egypt, the

Telecommunication Development Bureau (BDT) is organizing a Regional Network

Planning Workshop with Tool Case Studies for the Arab Region, which will take place

at NTI premises, Cairo-Egypt, from 16 to 27 July 2006.

Telecommunication networks architectures are changing to meet new requirements for a

number of services/applications (Broadband, IP, Multimedia, mobile, etc.). New

generation equipment (soft switches, databases, service controllers, new protocols and

interfaces, etc.) and new call/mix traffic cases are going to be introduced in the networks.

Different solutions/network architectures can be taken into account for a smooth transition

from existing network infrastructures (PSTN/PLMN) towards NGN as a result of the

convergence process leading to different applications/services sharing network

infrastructures.

Network planning activities evolve with the proper evolution of the network, the services,

the technologies, the market and the regulatory environment. These evolutions imply a

wider set of options to implement a network than in the past and as a consequence, the

importance of careful planning and analysis for alternatives have larger impact on the

network capabilities today in order to assure the needed capacities, the associated quality

of service and the required investments.

Considering the initial status of the operator’s network and the different solutions/network

architectures that exist for the network evolution, each Network Planning case has to be

analyzed and dealt with by using a proper portfolio of planning tools and tool

combinations.

The workshop is addressed to network planning experts and managers from telecom

operators, policy makers and regulators of developing countries and countries with

economies in transition to present the Network Planning scenario and the related and

appropriate Network Planning Tools needed for the development of their respective

strategies for the evolution of the present network architectures and the transition to the

next generation networks - NGN. Practical case studies with the utilization of Planning

Tools will be presented and developed during the Workshop by directly involving the

participants.

It is recommended that your representative(s) designated to participate in the workshop

be expert and specialized in the subject matter.

The Draft Program of the Workshop is attached herewith for your information and

participation.

Any presentations and/or contributions for the organization of the Workshop will be highly

appreciated and should be notified electronically to the ITU, no later than 30 June 2006,

to the attention of Mr. Riccardo Passerini, e-mail: riccardo.passerini@itu.int.

The Workshop will be conducted in English. Please note that an interpretation into French

will be provided for the first two days devoted to the principles and background of network

planning.

Your Administration/Company/Organization is cordially invited to participate in this event.

You are kindly requested to complete and fax, by 30 June 2006 at the latest, the

attached Registration Form for all your representatives and the Hotel Reservation Form to

the Workshop Coordinator, Dr. Bahnasy NOSSIER, Head of Network Planning Dept., NTI

(Fax: +202 263 68 02), with copy to the ITU Regional Office in Cairo (Fax: +202 2622

274) and to Mr. Passerini (Fax: +41 22 730 5484).

Those participants requiring entry visa to Egypt are requested to contact their local

Embassy/Consulate of Egypt for information well in advance. In case there is no Embassy

or Consulate of Egypt in your country, it is recommended to fax a copy of your passport to

Dr. Bahnasy NOSSIER, Head of Network Planning Dept., NTI (Fax: +202 263 68 02), or

via E-mail: bnossier@nti.sci.eg, in order to assist in issuing your visa.

All the related information on the Workshop are available at the following websites:
